Founder, Institute for Functional Medicine
Coined the term functional medicine in 1990 and built the systems-biology framework — antecedents, triggers, mediators — that the field still teaches.
EvidenceFramework, not therapy. Its value is as a clinical organising model; it has never itself been tested against usual care.
Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine; Function Health
The field's most public physician. Co-founded Cleveland Clinic's functional medicine centre in 2014 and, in 2023, Function Health, a consumer platform running 100+ biomarkers per member.
EvidenceThe Cleveland Clinic cohort study is the strongest outcomes data functional medicine has. Broad biomarker panels in asymptomatic adults remain unvalidated for screening.
Neurologist; ReCODE protocol
Argues Alzheimer's is a network response to multiple insults and should be treated with a personalised, multi-domain protocol rather than a single drug.
EvidenceA 2024 precision-medicine trial reported cognitive improvement in a small proctored group. No randomised comparison to standard care has been published.
University of Iowa; MS diet research
Took her own dietary protocol for progressive multiple sclerosis into funded academic trials rather than leaving it as testimony.
EvidenceRandomised diet trials in relapsing-remitting MS show improvements in fatigue and quality of life. Disability progression endpoints remain unproven.
Stanford Genetics; deep longitudinal phenotyping
Ran the integrated Personal Omics Profile — genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and wearables tracked in the same people over years.
EvidenceThe most rigorous version of the functional-medicine premise. Detects real early signals; the clinical value of acting on most of them is still being measured.
King's College London; PREDICT / ZOE
Showed that glycaemic and lipaemic responses to identical meals differ widely between people, and that gut microbiome composition predicts part of that variance.
EvidenceLarge, well-powered, peer-reviewed. Whether personalised dietary advice changes hard outcomes is the open question.

Frontier and alternative therapies deserve serious coverage. Serious coverage means asking what is measured, by whom, and against what control.
